NATIONAL 9-1-1
EDUCATION MONTH
April is 9-1-1 Education
Month!
Eight national organizations have
teamed up to recognize April as national 9-1-1 Education Month! We
are calling upon public safety officials, schools, government
officials, and industry leaders to engage in a national effort to
educate children, seniors, and the general public about the
importance and appropriate use of 9-1-1. During the month of April,
these organizations will conduct special outreach to build on
existing state and local 9-1-1 education efforts in an attempt to
raise the issue of 9-1-1 education to a national level.
Recognizing the importance of 9-1-1
education, the United States House of Representatives recently
passed their own resolution establishing a national 9-1-1 Education
Month. As Representative John Shimkus (R-IL) said,
“"Ensuring that 9-1-1 callers know when and
how to use the 9-1-1 system must be a priority,” and
with your help that is what this April, and every April to follow,
will be all about.

HAPPENING IN YOUR STATE?
CALIFORNIA
SHASCOM has an active public education program. We
go to schools regularly, with several scheduled for April, to
present 9-1-1 for Kids. We also do 9-1-1 for kids for after school
programs. We encourage tours of our center, hosting tours for
groups as diverse as the "Amblin A's" ,
which is a senior group that collects model A cars, to
pre-schools. We do a tour, video and question period each time,
and everyone leaves with a small gift. We have also done public
service spots, such as what to do in an earthquake or what to do
in a storm. Every time we get new technology, such as emergency
notification, we bring it the media to explain it to our citizens.
