September 29, 2006 - Congressional Staff and Member Tour
Unified Communications Center - Washington, DC

On September 29th, the E9-1-1 Institute visited the Unified Communications Center (UCC) in Washington, DC.  Approximately 25 people attend the tour and saw first had what the facility is doing.  The UCC facility has consolidated under the newly formed agency, the Office of Unified Communications (OUC), the "command and control" functions of: Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Management Agency and Public Services Calls to 9-1-1, 3-1-1, and the District's customer service line (202) 727-1000 are now received at the center and processed for appropriate action. During major emergencies, the center will become the District’s Emergency Operations Center (Mayor's Command Center) and provide a central location for multiple agencies to address any variety of situations.  The Communication Center averages approximately 1.65 million calls annually.

September 13, 2006 - E9-1-1 Summit
CTIA
Wireless I.T. & Entertainment® Conference
Los Angeles, CA

On September 13, 2006, we hosted a special “E9-1-1 Summit”  at the CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment® Conference in Los Angeles, California.  The Summit was collaboration with CTIA and featured a number of public safety and industry leaders in the area of 9-1-1.  We were also fortunate to have a special appearance of former Hiesman Trophy Winner and NFL All-Pro wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders, Tim Brown.  Mr. Brown is now very involved with an organization called “9-1-1 for Kids” which produces educational material used around the country to teach children about 9-1-1.  His appearance also drew in Steve Largent, the NFL Hall of Famer for the Seattle Seahawks and President of CTIA.  It was fun to talk football and 9-1-1.

Event Summary


March 2006 - Emergency Preparedness and Response Forum
Denton, Texas

This week the E9-1-1 Institute was in Denton, Texas hosting an Emergency Preparedness and Response Forum. The forum, which was co-sponsored by Representative Michael Burgess (R-TX) and the University of North Texas, was an enormous success.  Over 250 people including Mayors, Police and Fire Chiefs and Congressional staff attended.  Also, E9-1-1 Institute Citizen in Action honoree for 2006 Dustin Nelon was also recognized by Representative Burgess for his heroic actions last year. 

The forum explored a variety of emergency preparedness and public safety issues. Topics included: Safeguarding the Public Health—Pandemics and Biohazards; Effective Management of Response to Natural Disasters--Public Safety and the Weather; Incorporating the Private Sector into Disaster Response and Local Implications of Distant Events. Dr. Paul Pepe of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center provided the keynote address titled "Anachronistic Catastrophes: The Past, Present & Future of Disaster Medicine."  The event was a great success and we look forward to future Hometown Security Forums.

October 12, 2005 - North Dakota Hometown Security Forum

The forum explored the current security issues facing the state of North Dakota and discussed how technology advances relate to public safety. The E9-1-1 Institute established a dialogue with the residents of North Dakota on how to better respond to emergencies and to highlight the role that technology plays in emergency response.


September 1, 2005 - Hometown Security Forum, Great Falls, MT
The E9-1-1 Institute along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Citizen Corps conducted a Hometown Security Forum on community preparedness.   The forum included presentations by local and state public safety officials, industry professionals and citizen leaders who will discuss issues relating to community preparedness and technology.

The event also featured Senator Conrad Burns(R-MT), Co-Chair of the Congressional E9-1-1 Caucus at a special luncheon honoring Senator Burns’ leadership on public safety issues.

The event was open to the public.
